Boulders on Mercury

چکیده

Boulders on the surfaces of planets, satellites and small bodies, as well their geological associations, provide important information about surface processes. We analyzed all available images Mercury that have sufficient resolution quality to detect boulders, we mapped boulders observed. The lower size limit detectable was ~5 m. All found are associated with fresh impact craters hundreds meters in diameter or larger. compared boulder population same Moon, ~30 times less abundant than lunar highlands. This exact quantitative estimate is inherently inaccurate due limitation source data; however, significant relative rarity can be firmly reliably established. discuss possible causes observed difference. Higher thermal stresses more rapid material fatigue diurnal temperature cycling may cause disintegration upper decimeters thus contribute obliteration; these factors alone cannot account for A proposed thicker regolith likely significantly reduce production rate. higher micrometeoritic flux result abrasion being a dominant contributor degradation; this high rate shortens lifetime. combination appears able Mercury.

Weibull, H. 2000. Bryophytes on boulders diversity, habitat preferences and conservation aspects. Doctor’s dissertation. ISSN 1401-6230, ISBN 91-576-5893-5 The influence of different overstorey tree species on the floristic composition of bryophytes growing on boulders was studied in two deciduous forests. Covering tree species and amount of litter were the factors explaining most of the variat...

Boulders on asteroid Toutatis as observed by Chang’e-2

Boulders are ubiquitously found on the surfaces of small rocky bodies in the inner solar system and their spatial and size distributions give insight into the geological evolution and collisional history of the parent bodies. Using images acquired by the Chang'e-2 spacecraft, more than 200 boulders have been identified over the imaged area of the near-Earth asteroid Toutatis. The cumulative bou...

Impact History of Eros: Craters and Boulders

Preliminary measurements of craters and boulders have been made in various locations on Eros from images acquired during the first nine months of NEAR Shoemaker’s orbital mission, including the October 2000 low altitude flyover. (We offer some very preliminary, qualitative analysis of later LAF images and very highresolution images obtained during NEAR’s landing on 12 February 2001). Craters on...

Survival times of meter-sized boulders on the surface of the Moon

Analysis of the abundance of ejecta boulders Z2 m in diameter on the rims of twelve lunar craters (150– 950 m in diameter) of known formation ages (2–300 Ma) led to estimates of the survival times of metersized boulders against collisional destruction on the Moon. The median survival time, when 50% of the original rock population 42 m was destroyed, is about 40–80 Ma, while the 99% survival tim...
